Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon The Dow, all-timeThe average was created by Charles Dow in 1896 with just 12 industrial stocks. Paired with the Dow Jones Transportation Average , the two were collectively meant to offer a gauge for the broader economy. The sole caveat: No utility or transportation stocks are included, given the existence of the Dow Jones Utility Average and Transportation Average. 1972: Dow hits 1,000It may be hard to imagine given the recent achievement, but the Dow traded below 1,000 until the early 1970s. The Dow saw its worst year since 2008 in 2022, though 2023's rebound allowed the index to erase those losses.

U.S. officials had said last week that the floating pier and causeway had been completed, but that weather conditions had delayed their installation. An American ship loaded with humanitarian aid, the Sagamore, set off for Gaza from Cyprus last week, and the aid was loaded onto a smaller vessel that had been waiting for the pier to be installed. Aid groups say the devastation in Gaza after seven months of Israeli bombardment, strict Israeli inspections and restrictions on crossing points are limiting the amount of aid that can enter Gaza. The Pentagon has said that the pier could help deliver as many as two million meals a day. An aid group, World Central Kitchen, built a makeshift jetty in mid-March to deliver aid by sea to Gaza for the first time in nearly two decades.

NATO allies are inching closer to sending troops into Ukraine to train Ukrainian forces, a move that would be another blurring of a previous red line and could draw the United States and Europe more directly into the war. As a result, Ukrainian officials have asked their American and NATO counterparts to help train 150,000 new recruits closer to the front line for faster deployment. So far the United States has said no, but Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Thursday that a NATO deployment of trainers appeared inevitable. For now, he said, an effort inside Ukraine would put “a bunch of NATO trainers at risk” and would most likely mean deciding whether to use precious air defenses to protect the trainers instead of critical Ukrainian infrastructure near the battlefield.

Investing can be intimidating, but financial planners recommend index funds to make things easier. Index funds are generally low-cost, but make sure you understand what fees are involved. Instead, experts have a suggestion to reduce the overwhelm for new and experienced investors alike: total stock market index funds, which give you exposure to the stock market more broadly. AdvertisementWhen you're picking your total market index fund, keep in mind that many of the funds are tracking the same indexes. Susan Dziubinski, an investment specialist at investment research firm Morningstar, identified total market funds as one of the five best ways to invest money.

The U.S. military anchored a temporary pier on Gaza’s coast on Thursday, creating a point of entry for humanitarian aid for the enclave, where the flow of supplies through land borders has largely come to a halt since Israel began its incursion into Rafah last week. The aid will be loaded onto trucks that will begin moving ashore “in the coming days,” the U.S. Central Command said in a statement Thursday morning. U.S. officials had said last week that the floating pier and causeway had been completed, but that weather conditions had delayed their installation. An American ship loaded with humanitarian aid, the Sagamore, set off for Gaza from Cyprus last week, and the aid was loaded onto a smaller vessel that had been waiting for the pier to be installed. The United Nations will receive the aid and oversee its distribution in Gaza, according to Central Command, which said no U.S. troops would set foot in the territory.

At a rally in Wildwood, N.J., on Saturday, Donald Trump said that if he is re-elected, he will “immediately deport” any campus protesters who “come here from another country and try to bring jihadism or anti-Americanism or antisemitism.”Of course, Trump dwells in linguistic imprecision. What does “try to bring” mean? Are we using his definitions of jihadism, anti-Americanism and antisemitism? Would the deportations be only of student visa holders, or would it include green card holders? Trump understands, intuitively, the power of crowds, and views it as a pressing threat when aligned against him.

A Shock of Red for a Royal Portrait
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( Vanessa Friedman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Royal portraits, as a rule, tend to be fairly staid, predictable affairs. Full of symbolism, sure, but generally symbolism of the traditional, establishment kind: symbols of state, of office, of pomp and lineage. Which is why the new official portrait of King Charles III by Jonathan Yeo, the first since the king’s coronation, has created such a controversy. A larger-than-life (7.5 foot-by-5.5 foot) canvas, the portrait shows the king standing in his Welsh Guards uniform, hands on the hilt of his sword, a half-smile on his face, with a butterfly hovering just over his right shoulder. His entire body is bathed in a sea of crimson, so his face appears to be floating.

Why Do People Make Music?

Music baffled Charles Darwin. He speculated that music evolved as a way to win over potential mates. Some researchers are developing new evolutionary explanations for music. Others maintain that music is a cultural invention, like writing, that did not need natural selection to come into existence. On Wednesday, a team of 75 researchers published a more personal investigation of music.

Royal family members sit for portraits a lot. Some of these portraits have drawn near-unanimous praise and stood the test of time, captivating viewers generations later. With some artworks, critics objected royals were too gloomy, too naked, or, in the case of King Charles III’s latest portrait, too red. In the painting unveiled on Tuesday, Charles is enveloped in a cloud of crimson, hot pink and fuchsia. The artist, Jonathan Yeo, told The New York Times in an interview last month that he got to know his subject over four sittings, beginning in 2021, when Charles was still Prince of Wales, and continuing after the coronation last May.

CNN —Alice Munro, the Nobel Literature Prize winner best known for her mastery of short stories and depictions of womanhood in rural settings, has died in Ontario, Canada, at the age of 92. The news was confirmed to CNN “with great sadness” by a spokesperson at her publisher, Penguin Random House. It largely sets the tone for Munro’s prose; semi-autobiographical in nature and exploring the universality of the human urge for self-discovery, love, and independence, through the mundanity of everyday life in small, rural communities. Mark Gitenstein, the U.S. ambassador to the EU, said China is deliberately distorting markets with a glut of cheap goods. Speaking to CNBC's Silvia Amaro on Tuesday, Gitenstein said China was "engaged in a deliberate effort to undermine economic sectors in both Europe and the United States." The Chinese Embassy in London did not immediately respond to a request for comment when contacted by CNBC. It comes amid growing concerns over a raft of cheap Chinese "green" goods — such as EVs, batteries and solar panels — flooding international markets. White House officials have already warned Beijing to amend certain trade practices that it argues have weakened global supply chains.

Georgia, now 31, plunged into the water and twice fought off the reptile to save her twin sister, an extraordinary act of bravery for which she is now receiving the King’s Gallantry Medal. The award from King Charles III recognizes acts in which civilians put themselves at risk in an attempt to save someone else. It is a “silver lining to have come out of the terrible ordeal,” Georgia told the UK’s PA Media news agency. She sustained bite injuries to her hand, but the impact was hard enough that the crocodile eventually released her sister.

The 7.5 foot-by-5.5-foot portrait was commissioned by the Worshipful Company of Drapers, a medieval guild of wool and cloth merchants that is now a philanthropy. It will hang in Drapers’ Hall, the group’s baronial quarters in London’s financial district, which has a gallery of monarchs from King George III to Queen Victoria. Mr. Yeo has also painted the king’s wife, Queen Camilla, and his father, Prince Philip. He has said that the best portraits capture visual characteristics that remain relevant even as the person ages. When it came to the king, Mr. Yeo told The Times that he had noticed physical changes in their four sittings together — during which time the king was going through a metamorphosis of stature.
